What does “NABH” stand for?

NABH is the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers.

What is NABH accreditation?

NABH Accreditation is the accreditation of a hospital to NABH Standard Release 2007 which is accredited by International Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQUA). This body is not for profit. This NABH is supported by government bodies and industries.

What is Accreditation?

A public recognition of the accomplishment of accreditation standards by a healthcare organization, established through an independent external match appraisal of that organization’s level of execution in relation to the standards.

How many years is the accreditation cycle?

NABH accreditation is for a period of 3 years.

How is the accreditation process being done?

Assessment for accreditation varies depends on the size, facility and scope of services offered by it. Documentation review will be done by NABH assessment team which is followed by Pre-assessment and Final Assessment. Validity for the accreditation is for a period of 3 years.

What are the programs being offered by NABH?

Currently, NABH is providing accreditation programs for Hospitals, Nursing Homes, Blood Banks, Primary and Secondary Health Centres. In addition to that it also conducts programs such as Medical Imaging services, Dental Hospitals etc.

What is the role of NABH in preparing organizations for accreditation?

NABH provides information on documents and procedures and organizes awareness programs .It provide guidance to organization at various stages of accreditation. However, NABH does not provide consultancy service.

What are NABH accreditation standards for hospitals?

The organization is rated against 100 standards and 503 objective elements contained in 10 chapters. It is outlined by Technical Committee of NABH. It has a set of standards for evaluation of hospital for grant of accreditation.

How to apply for NABH Accreditation?

The hospitals have to fill an application form for NABH Accreditation and the forms are available at NABH Secretariat or can be downloaded it from the web-site. The filed application form should be sent with the needed application fee. Hospitals should also attach a duly signed ‘Terms and Conditions’ document for obtaining NABH Accreditation’.

How can a hospital/healthcare provider prepare itself for NABH Accreditation?

A hospital may get a copy of NABH accreditation standards if they planning to go for NABH accreditation. They can implement self-assessment on the condition of compliance, with the standards to assure that the standards are executed and integrated with the hospital functioning.

Is NABH accreditation a one-time phenomenon?

This NABH accreditation is not a one-time phenomenon. Once the hospital gets accredited,
  • It will be valid for a period of 3 years
  • NABH conducts an annual surveillance for the accredited hospitals
  • The visit for surveillance e will be organized during the 2nd year
  • Hospital shall go for renewal of accreditation to NABH at least 6 months before expiry of validity of accreditation for which reassessment shall be carried out
